MTL SDM modular surge protector.
MTL SDM modular surge protector for data & signal applications
SDM surge protectors are globally certified and deliver the highest 20kA level of protection within a compact 7mm, modular design. Available in a range of voltages (7V, 16V, 32V & 55V) with a current capacity of 700mA and 4A for “high current”, the MTL SDM addresses a wide variety of applications and represents a step forward in surge protection designed for hazardous area process control environments.
MTL SDM Modular Surge Protector for Data & Signal Applications
The MTL SDM modular range from Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds series takes the established SD range to the next level by introducing a replaceable element. While maintaining unrivalled packing density, the modular design enables easy maintenance by allowing surge protection modules to be replaced without disconnecting the loop wiring.

Design features
All the active surge protection components are contained within the pluggable module, allowing quick removal without disconnecting the wiring. Replacement costs are reduced, as only the modular part needs to be changed.
The MTL SDM range offers the same slim-line 7 mm footprint as the MTL SD range, increasing packing density and saving both space and cost, potentially reducing the number of cabinets required.
An optional innovative “make before break” design ensures uninterrupted signal and loop protection during removal or replacement of the surge module. The signal to the DCS shows no interruption, avoiding nuisance alarms.
A diagnostic LED option provides a clear visual indication of a failed module, allowing faults to be identified and rectified immediately.
Additional options include a fuse for extra protection against fault currents and a convenient disconnect method for isolating field circuitry without module removal.
The MTL SDM is backwards compatible with the MTL SD range, enabling easy upgrades during routine maintenance while benefiting from the new features.
