Why EV chargers need surge protection
EV chargers are often installed outdoors, on long cable runs and in car parks exposed to lightning. Their power electronics and communication modules are sensitive to surges, and a failure means downtime and lost revenue.
Protection concept
- AC supply: Type 1+2 SPD at the main board, Type 2 at the charger
- DC side (fast chargers): DC SPDs rated for the charging voltage
- Data lines: Ethernet, RS485 and OCPP communication protection
- Equipotential bonding and a low-impedance earthing system
VTL supplies Eaton and Weidmüller VARITECTOR SPDs and designs complete protection for charging stations.
